A chipped tooth almost always happens at the worst moment — biting into something hard, a sports collision, a fall, or a fork that found a piece of bone. The good news is that most chips are very fixable, and acting calmly in the first hour gives you the best result. Here's exactly what to do, and how chips are repaired based on how serious they are.
First 10 Minutes — Do This Now
- Rinse gently with warm water to clean the area
- Save the fragment if you find it — keep it in milk or saliva; we can sometimes reattach it
- Stop any bleeding with gentle pressure from clean gauze for 10 minutes
- Reduce swelling with a cold compress on the outside of your cheek
- Cover a sharp edge with dental wax or a piece of sugar-free gum so it doesn't cut your tongue or cheek
- Manage pain with over-the-counter ibuprofen — avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum
- Call us at (972) 276-4888 to be seen and prevent the chip from getting worse
Is It an Emergency? How to Tell
- Small chip, no pain
- Rough or slightly sharp edge
- A cosmetic chip on a front tooth
- No sensitivity to hot or cold
- Large break or big missing piece
- Sharp or throbbing pain
- Bleeding that won't stop
- You can see a pink/red dot (the nerve)
- Swelling of the face or gums
If any of the right-hand signs apply, treat it as a dental emergency — we hold same-day slots on our open days.
How We Repair It — By Severity
| Type of Chip | Typical Repair |
|---|---|
| Tiny enamel chip | Smooth & polish — often one short visit |
| Small–moderate chip | Tooth-colored bonding in one visit |
| Large front-tooth break | Veneer or crown |
| Break into the nerve | Root canal + crown |
| Cracked below the gumline | May need extraction + replacement |
My goal is always the most conservative repair that will last. A small chip caught early often costs little and takes one visit; the same tooth ignored for months can crack further and need far more. If you grind your teeth, a chip is also a warning sign — a night guard may be the key to preventing the next one.
