Dental Bridges in Frisco TX — When a Bridge Is the Right Call

By Dr. Chakrapani Nannapaneni, DDS · UCSF School of Dentistry · June 2026 · Frisco TX

Dental implants have become the gold standard for tooth replacement — and rightly so. But a dental bridge remains a genuinely good choice in specific situations, and I recommend it regularly. Understanding when each is appropriate helps patients make an informed decision rather than choosing based on marketing alone.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring artificial teeth (pontics) to the crowns placed on the teeth on either side of the gap (abutment teeth). The result is a fixed, non-removable restoration that looks and functions like natural teeth.

A standard 3-unit bridge (one missing tooth with two abutment teeth) involves:

  1. Visit 1: Abutment teeth are shaped to receive crowns. Digital impressions taken. Temporary bridge placed.
  2. Lab fabrication (1–2 weeks): Custom porcelain bridge made to exact specifications.
  3. Visit 2: Temporary removed, permanent bridge tried in for fit and color. Permanently cemented. Bite checked.

When a Bridge Is the Better Choice Over an Implant

Adjacent teeth already need crowns. If the teeth on either side of the gap are significantly decayed or previously restored and need crowns anyway, a bridge is more efficient — you're addressing three teeth in one procedure.

Insufficient bone for an implant. Bone grafting before an implant adds 4–6 months and significant cost. If bone is inadequate and the patient doesn't want grafting, a bridge provides a fixed solution without surgery.

Timeline matters. A bridge is complete in 2–3 weeks. An implant takes 3–6 months (healing period). For patients who need a faster solution, a bridge delivers a permanent result much sooner.

Medical conditions that prevent implant surgery. Patients with certain bleeding disorders, uncontrolled diabetes, or taking bisphosphonates may not be implant candidates. A bridge provides a fixed, non-surgical solution.

Caring for a Dental Bridge

The most critical aspect of bridge care is cleaning under the pontic (false tooth) — the area between the artificial tooth and the gum. Food and plaque accumulate here and, if not removed, cause gum disease and decay on the abutment teeth. Options:

  • Floss threader — thread floss under the bridge to clean beneath the pontic. Takes practice but works perfectly
  • Water flosser (Waterpik) — directs a stream of water under the bridge; the easiest method for most patients
  • Interdental brushes — small brushes that fit under the pontic from the side
