Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning in Frisco TX — What's the Difference?

By Dr. Chakrapani Nannapaneni, DDS · UCSF School of Dentistry · June 2026 · Frisco TX

"Do I really need a deep cleaning?" is one of the most common questions I get after treatment recommendations. It's a fair question — the terminology is confusing, and patients are right to want to understand what they're paying for and why. Here's the honest breakdown.

Regular Cleaning (Prophylaxis) — For Healthy Gums

A standard cleaning — technically called a prophylaxis — removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces above and slightly below the gumline. It's a preventive procedure for patients who have healthy gum tissue with normal pocket depths (1–3mm).

What happens during a regular cleaning:
  • Scaling — removing plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces above the gumline
  • Polishing — removing surface stains with prophylaxis paste
  • Flossing — cleaning between teeth
  • Fluoride treatment (optional) — strengthening enamel

Duration: 45–60 min · Frequency: Every 6 months · Insurance: Typically covered 100% by PPO plans · Cost without insurance: $100–$200

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing) — For Gum Disease

A deep cleaning — called scaling and root planing (SRP) — is a treatment, not a routine procedure. It's recommended when a patient has periodontitis: gum disease that has caused pockets to deepen beyond 4mm and tartar to build up below the gumline where regular instruments can't reach.

The key difference: scaling and root planing goes below the gumline, using specialized instruments to:

What happens during scaling and root planing:
  • Local anesthesia administered — the area is fully numb
  • Scaling — removing tartar and bacteria from below the gumline, all the way to the base of the pocket
  • Root planing — smoothing the root surfaces so bacteria can't re-attach as easily
  • Antibiotic therapy may be placed in deep pockets

Duration: 1–1.5 hrs per session · Sessions: Usually 2 (split by side or quadrant) · Insurance: Covered 50–80% by most PPO plans · Cost: $150–$350/quadrant

How Dr. C Determines Which You Need

The decision is based entirely on clinical measurements — not guesswork:

FindingMeaningRecommended Cleaning
Pockets 1–3mm, no bleedingHealthy gumsRegular cleaning (prophylaxis)
Pockets 4mm with bleedingEarly gingivitis/periodontitisSRP in affected areas
Pockets 5mm+ with bone loss on X-rayEstablished periodontitisFull SRP + periodontal maintenance every 3–4 months

At Frisco Dental Hub, Dr. C records and shows you your pocket depth measurements at every exam. If deep cleaning is recommended, you'll see exactly which teeth have elevated readings and why the recommendation is clinically justified. Ask to see your numbers — they're in your chart.

After Deep Cleaning — What Comes Next?

Scaling and root planing is not a one-time fix. Gum disease is chronic and manageable, not curable. After SRP, most patients transition to periodontal maintenance visits every 3–4 months (rather than standard 6-month cleanings) to prevent the disease from progressing. Consistent home care and these more frequent visits are what keep gum disease under control long-term.

Due for a Cleaning or Concerned About Your Gums?

Frisco Dental Hub checks pocket depths at every exam and will only recommend deep cleaning if the measurements support it. Call to schedule.
